Bugatti Bag

Nothing happens unless
first we dream. Carl Sandburg

When Ettore Bugatti made the decision to leave his artistic career and focus all his energy on the creation of spectacular ‘automotive works of art’, which combined unique style with state-of-the-art engineering and technology, the world of car manufacturing underwent something of a revolution.

Thanks to Bugatti, the automobile went from being a futuristic medium for enthusiasts of technology and innovation to a luxury must-have for connoisseurs of style and elegance.

This tradition is still very much relevant today. In fact, Bugatti cars come complete with a series of bespoke travel accessories: the perfect response to any conceivable need. This is how the first Bugatti Bag was born: designed as an innovative, chic accessory. The aim was to obtain the best possible performance from a bag, which simultaneously expressed artisanal excellence and meticulous attention to detail. The bag was the result of a fruitful professional collaboration with Emìle Hermés, who along with Ettore shared a passion for the equestrian world as well as the crafting of exquisite items.

The very first model, designed in 1923, was developed vertically, it was very deep and featured a single zip with a clasp, thus making it the first ever bag with that particular kind of fastening. The double handles on the bag was another new feature, made from rolled pieces of leather they made it extremely comfortable to carry, the comfort factor was further enhanced by a removable shoulder strap.

Looking back allows me to look forward.

The original shape of the Bugatti Bag echoes the iconic radiator grill from the company’s vintage cars, particularly the Type 35, which has the same lines as the elegant accessory; a horseshoe provided inspiration for its unmistakable shape, symbolic of dynamic energy and noble power. A square bottom and arched upper section, the bag proudly bears the EB emblem (Ettore Bugatti), thus becoming a succinct illustration of this luxury-oriented brand.

The working collaboration with Hermés during the Twenties cultivated lively debate around the Bugatti Bag. The original design is said to be the brainchild of Emìle Hermés himself, that it was specifically designed for his wife who wanted a bag that was suitable for travelling by car, by Bugatti of course. In fact, there is still a bag in the Hermés production bearing a very strong resemblance to the original Bugatti bag. However, after Bugatti claimed intellectual property of the item, the French maison renamed it and it became the ‘Bolide Bag’.

Today, thanks to the launch of collections which celebrate a lifestyle oriented towards Bugatti’s perspective, the bag from the Twenties has come back in all its glory as an example of the highest artisanal mastery. Made exclusively from the finest leathers, ranging from premium-quality calf leather to sumptuous crocodile, the Bugatti Bag has maintained that distinctive shape inspired by the radiator grill found on vintage racing cars. By increasing its size it has turned into a functional yet elegant travel accessory, in line with a more masculine style – discreet but wonderfully sophisticated. This bag is the only accessory from the collection designed for women as well as men.

Also available in the distinctive shade of blue symbolising the brand, the Bugatti Bag has taken its place as the iconic symbol of the Bugatti lifestyle.
